Shelf Life and Storage Conditions of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose

2026-02-01

The shelf life and storage conditions of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) vary depending on the product grade. The core requirements are airtight sealing, moisture protection, protection from light, and temperature control to maintain its viscosity and physicochemical properties.

I. Shelf Life (from the date of manufacture, unopened original packaging)

Industrial grade: 4 years, for conventional industrial applications, under standard storage conditions

Food grade/Pharmaceutical grade: 2 years, must be stored separately from toxic, harmful, and strongly odorous substances

Laboratory grade: 3 years at room temperature; 1 year at -20℃; 2 years at -80℃, sealed and protected from moisture, avoid repeated freezing and thawing

Aqueous solution (0.5%): ≤1 week at 4℃, it is recommended to prepare and use immediately, long-term storage requires the addition of antibacterial agents

II. Standard Storage Conditions

1. Environmental Requirements

Store in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, away from water sources, steam pipes, and high-humidity areas; relative humidity ≤80%, temperature controlled at 10–30℃ (maximum not exceeding 40℃), avoid high temperatures and direct sunlight.

2. Packaging and Protection

Use moisture-proof and airtight packaging (such as 25kg kraft paper bags + PE inner bags, fiber drums), ensuring a tight seal; prevent packaging damage to avoid moisture absorption, caking, and viscosity reduction.

3. Storage and Handling

Store separately from toxic, harmful, and strongly odorous materials; stacking should not be too high to avoid crushing damage; handle with care to prevent packaging damage leading to moisture absorption and contamination.

4. Special Scenarios

For solutions, refrigeration at 4℃ is recommended, the amount prepared at one time should not be too large, and it should be used as soon as possible; dry powder must not come into contact with strong acids, strong bases, and heavy metal ions to prevent performance degradation.

III. Expiration Judgment and Usage Tips

If caking, mold, odor, or a significant decrease in solution viscosity occurs, do not use the product.

Use the product as soon as possible after opening, and seal the remaining product promptly; the shelf life will be correspondingly shortened; refer to the manufacturer's product specifications for details.
