Coating Material Grade Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose Functions:
Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is a multi-chain macromolecular compound. After water swelling, its linear molecular chains unfold, diffuse and interact to form a network structure. The hydroxyl groups on CMC macromolecular chains undergo hydration with water and intermolecular entanglement, effectively increasing the viscosity of aqueous phases. Featuring excellent compatibility with water, organic solvents and pigments, CMC serves as a high-performance thickener, dispersant and stabilizer in the coatings industry.
Main Applications
1. Application in Conventional Coatings
CMC elevates the viscosity and optimizes rheological properties of aqueous coating systems via molecular hydration and chain entanglement. With outstanding compatibility with solvents and pigments, it endows water-based coatings with comprehensive superior performance, as detailed below:
• Delivers excellent water resistance and long-term film durability;
• Produces coating films with high fullness, uniform texture and high gloss;
• Acts as a stabilizer to prevent film peeling caused by sudden temperature fluctuations;
• Functions as a protective colloid to stabilize coating systems over a wide pH range;
• Serves as an efficient thickener to achieve target viscosity for storage and construction, effectively mitigating coating stratification during storage;
• Improves film leveling, anti-splash and anti-sagging properties, significantly enhancing construction workability;
• Promotes uniform dispersion of pigments and fillers, and strengthens pigment adhesion performance of coating films.
2. Application in Latex Paints
Latex paints are mainly composed of polymer aqueous dispersions and pigment aqueous dispersions. Their viscosity directly affects settlement resistance, brushing & rolling constructability, film fullness, leveling and vertical anti-sagging performance. CMC exhibits ideal rheological properties with low brushing resistance and easy construction, and is widely used as a stabilizer, thickener and water retention agent for latex paints.
• Provides efficient and prominent thickening effect for latex paints;
• Ensures long-term storage stability, maintaining uniform paint viscosity without residue generation;
• Realizes slow water permeation into porous substrates and retains moisture for high latex content systems;
• Has low formula limitation, with stable performance barely affected by coating types, dispersants and surfactants;
• Recovers viscosity rapidly after film formation and water volatilization, effectively preventing film sagging.
3. Application in Casting Coatings
As a multi-chain macromolecule, CMC forms a network structure after water swelling. It can synergize with sodium-based bentonite to improve its suspension capacity, significantly reduce sediment agglomeration volume, and prevent settling of refractory aggregates. Accordingly, CMC is applied in casting coatings to enhance suspension stability and optimize system viscosity and rheology.
• Provides efficient aqueous thickening performance to improve coating viscosity and rheological behavior;
• Boasts good solubility and dispersibility to sustain stable suspension of solid particles in carrier liquid;
• Promotes suspension of refractory powder, avoiding settlement, stratification and excessive penetration of carrier liquid into molding materials;
• Improves the spreadability and covering power of coatings, and optimizes brushing and leveling performance;
• Enables solid powder adhesion after drying, forming a firm coating on internal and external substrate surfaces.
