Filtrate Volume of Polyanionic Cellulose

1. Prepare a 40 g/l NaCl solution as below:

Weigh 40 g of dried NaCl salt and place it in a 1000 ml volumetric flask containing 500 ml of distilled water. Shake until dissolved, add distilled water to the 1 liter mark and shake well. Let stand for 2 hours at 25±5°C.

2. Place in 350 ml beaker of NaCl solution, stir with Multimixer

3. Add 35 ± 0.01 g KCl, stir 3 mins

4. Add 1 ± 0.01 g NaHCO3, stir 3 mins

5. Add 28 ± 0.01 g clay, stir 5 mins

6. Scrape off the chemical on the side of the cup into the solution, stir for another 15 minutes

7. Add 2 ± 0.01 g for PAC-LV and PAC-R or 1 ± 0.01 g for PAC-HV (add very slowly to avoid clumping)

8. Stir for 5 minutes with the Multimixer

9. Scrape off the chemical on the side of the cup into the solution, stir for another 15 minutes

10. Cover tightly, let stand for 16 hours at 25 ± 5°C

11. Stir again for 5 minutes with the Multimixer before measuring (API Fluid loss test, 100psi, 30mins)

12. Read the amount of filtrate in 7 minutes 30 seconds (B1) and the amount of filtrate in 30 minutes (B2)

Filtrate Volume -Water discharge (B) is calculated by the formula: B = 2 x (B2-B1)
